The New Applied Arts Website

A guide to the highlights of our revamped home on the Internet

The new Applied Arts website has gone live. Echoing the print magazine’s new design and editorial focus, our site aims to become the hub of the Canadian visual communications industry by presenting the information, inspiration and expert insights needed to understand and appreciate it. A reinvigorated editorial section, larger images for our Awards winners and multimedia extensions for the print magazine's content are just three new features.

The site's colour scheme and overall design is the first noticeable change, reflecting the new look of Applied Arts, as established by the February/March issue. The homepage is also completely reshaped, with content regularly updated, putting a spotlight on the latest articles, profiles, award winners and other items of interest.

The Editorial tab is also new. You can see it on the navigation bar to the left. The Opinions page is updated every other week with a new op-ed piece, written by a member of the creative community at large on a topic they’re passionate about. We’re always open to taking article submissions, so if there’s something you’d like to get off your chest, get in touch with either our community coordinator Stuart Thursby or editor Peter Giffen.

The Profiles page is updated every other week as well—alternating with Opinions—and highlights the work and story of a talented studio or individual artist. The Current Issue page provides an overview and extends the content of the current magazine, displaying images and multimedia not possible to run in the print version. The Archive page is where past Opinions or Profiles are stored.

The Community tab is another new addition. You can jump straight to our blog, the Applied Arts Wire, as well as our other social media outlets through the Connect With Us page. The third link, Submit Your Work, provides an ongoing call for work submissions, story ideas and news items. Outlets for these submissions could include the blog, the online Profiles or Opinions pages, or the print magazine.

Use the Awards Winners tab to see the triumphant entries from our five awards programs. The Awards Info tab links to what you need to know (dates, how to enter, etc.) about our various Awards, including microsite links, judge announcements and more. Creative Careers continues to act as one of the industry’s most popular job sites, helping to bring together potential employers and employees. Use the Subscription link to manage your magazine subscription.

And finally, our Applied Arts Group tab contains links to the About Us, Contact Us and Advertise With Us pages. Our Editorial Schedule page showcases upcoming issues, with content overviews and printing dates. Applied Arts Portfolios provides a cost-effective way for photographers and illustrators to promote themselves. The Creative Guide link provides information about our annual directory of industry listings and explains how you can become listed yourself.

While we are proud of what we have created so far, we regard the site as a work continually in progress. So please give us your feedback, comments and suggestions to help us improve our offerings and foster a greater sense of community among Canadian creative types from coast to coast. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with our community coordinator Stuart Thursby.
